In episode 15 of The Jukebox Graduate, Dave and Eugene host their guest, producer Carl Alvarez, in order to discuss the new Ken Burns documentary COUNTRY MUSIC. The duo of dialogue first cover other topics: The Raconteurs at Amoeba, recent movies/upcoming music documentaries, Bryan Ferry at the Greek, recent suicides, and Eugene’s Fender Play Live appearance. Carl gives us an overview of the 16-hour PBS study of country music and goes over some highlights and things he learned after seeing the whole thing.

The Jukebox Graduate (Episode 14): Nothing Is Real

Episode 14 of The Jukebox Graduate finds the babbling boys of summer at Humble Hill studios on a grey drizzly day. Dave recalls his trip to Detroit and shares the Third Man recording that he made in the Voice-O-Graph while there. They talk about the Universal fire of 2008. Then it’s a discussion of the recent Martin Scorcese/Bob Dylan Rolling Thunder Revue film. Finally the lads wrap it up by covering the Radiohead hack story, Eugene’s new Fender guitar demonstration videos and his Everyone Loves Guitar interview.

In Episode 13 of The Jukebox Graduate, the lucky lads welcome Ted Russell Kamp to their show. Ted and Eugene go back many years and they comb through old memories. After discussing Bruce Springsteen’s new release news and Dave’s Record Store Day escapades, the discussion turns to Ted’s story of figuring out where he wanted music to take him and how he made the connections that took him on the road. He also discusses the fine points of co-writing, producing records for other artists and the work ethic that has helped him make numerous solo albums. Then Ted lets Eugene sit in on a live in-studio performance of one of the songs from his new album Walkin’ Shoes.

In episode 12 of The Jukebox Graduate, Dave and Eugene run through the news of the first couple of months of the year. The prattling pair briefly go over Dave’s trip to NAMM. Eugene complains about the film Bohemian Rhapsody and that begets a discussion about Rock ‘n’ Roll and movies, and the glory of The Monkees. Then, they interview Brad Sample and talk about his upcoming album, Rhinestones and Broken Bones. Brad had a hiccup releasing his album and that leads us to the recent news about Ryan Adams. The age old art-versus-artist discussion ensues and... well the guys just don’t have the answer. And finally we hear about the new music that is flipping the Graduates’ lids.
